How to Care for a Down Jacket: Washing, Drying & Storage

How to wash, dry and store a down jacket correctly, including the detergent question, loft restoration and DownTek™ care.

A high-quality down jacket properly cared for can last decades.

This guide explains what really happens to down over time, what the standard advice gets right and where it oversimplifies, and how to wash, dry and store a down jacket correctly for long-term performance. It's written specifically for Jöttnar down jackets using DownTek™ treated down, but the principles apply to any quality down jacket.

Why down needs care: what actually degrades performance

Down clusters are three-dimensional structures of interlocking filaments that insulate by trapping still air. Their ability to do this depends entirely on their ability to loft, that is to expand fully and fill the available space. Anything that prevents the clusters from expanding reduces the jacket's warmth.

Three specific mechanisms degrade loft over time. The first is body oil and sweat accumulation. Oils from your skin and hair transfer to the down clusters through the shell fabric and inner lining over repeated use. These oils cause the fine filaments to mat together, preventing them from expanding. This is the most common cause of apparent performance loss in a jacket that hasn't been properly maintained. It builds gradually and invisibly. You won't notice it in a single outing, but over a season of regular use the cumulative effect occurs. The second is detergent residue from washing with the wrong products - more on this below. The third is permanent compression from long-term storage, perhaps in a stuff sack. Down clusters that are kept compressed for months lose the structural resilience that allows them to spring back to full loft. This damage is cumulative and, beyond a certain point, irreversible.

A down jacket loses performance over time for three specific reasons. Understanding them makes every care decision obvious.

The practical implication: washing a down jacket when it needs washing is not damaging, rather, it's beneficial. The fear of washing can lead people to under-wash their jackets, allowing body oil accumulation to degrade performance. If your jacket seems less warm than it used to be, washing is almost always the right first step. Body oil build-up is the most likely cause, and a correct wash and dry will restore most of the lost performance. How often to wash: occasional wear, once a year is sufficient. Regular hard use, two to three times a year, or after any trip involving significant sweating or moisture exposure. If in doubt, wash it.

The detergent question: what specialist wash actually does

Most down care guides tell you to use specialist down wash rather than standard detergent in order to preserve the ‘natural oils’ in the down clusters. This is the standard advice, and it's worth examining because it's not quite correct.

Here's the issue: by the time down reaches a finished jacket, it has already been through extensive processing. Commercial down, particularly at the quality grades used in premium jackets, is thoroughly cleaned, sterilised and graded before it is ever sewn into a baffle. This process, which removes allergens, organic matter and odour-causing bacteria, also removes most of the natural oils from the clusters. The oils that specialist down wash is supposedly preserving have largely already been removed in the manufacturing process. So the "protect the natural oils" argument is, in practice, somewhat hollow. This doesn't mean specialist wash is pointless. It means the real reason to use it is different from the reason usually given.

Commercial down processing removes natural oils from down clusters as part of sterilisation and grading. The specialist detergent argument isn't about preserving oils that aren't there - it's about something more specific than that.

Standard detergents, particularly biological ones, contain enzymes that break down organic matter efficiently. This is exactly what makes them effective at removing stains and body soiling from everyday clothing. Down filaments (these are the fine strands that make up each cluster) are composed of keratin, the same fibrous protein as wool, hair and feathers. Repeated washing in standard biological detergent will, over time, gradually degrade this filament structure, reducing the clusters' ability to loft. This effect is not dramatic after a single wash, but it is cumulative.

Specialist down wash cleans effectively without biological enzyme chemistry. This being the case for using it. It also won't leave a detergent residue in the baffles that binds the filaments together, a consequence of the use of standard powder detergents in particular. The practical guidance: use a non-biological liquid detergent at minimum, but a specialist down wash such as Nikwax Down Wash Direct or Grangers Down Wash is the better choice for a jacket you're planning to use for many years. For DownTek™ treated down specifically, both Nikwax Down Wash Direct and Grangers Down Wash are compatible and will clean without stripping the hydrophobic treatment.

How to wash a down jacket

Use a front-loading machine. Top-loading machines with central agitators are too mechanically aggressive and the agitator can stress baffles and seams. A front-loader's drum tumbling action is gentle enough. If you only have a top-loader at home, use a launderette front-loader. Before washing: empty all pockets, close all zips, velcro and press studs. Clean the detergent drawer of any residual standard detergent as even small amounts can affect the wash. If there are visible stains, spot clean them first with a damp cloth and a small amount of down wash before putting the jacket in the machine.

Wash the jacket on its own or with one other down item, not mixed with other laundry. Add the down wash following the dosage instructions; for Nikwax Down Wash Direct, add directly to the drum rather than the drawer. Set to a gentle or delicates cycle at 30°C with a low spin speed if possible. Some Jöttnar jacket care labels specify cold wash. Always follow the label instruction for your specific jacket. Run an additional rinse cycle after the main wash. This matters: residual down wash in the baffles is almost as problematic as residual standard detergent, preventing full loft. When removing the jacket from the drum, support its full weight; wet down is heavy and a jacket lifted by one shoulder can stress the baffles and seams.

Washing a down jacket correctly is straightforward. The precautions exist for specific reasons. Understand the reason and the precaution makes sense.

Spot cleaning for minor marks: dampen a cloth with warm water and a small amount of down wash, work gently into the mark from the outside without scrubbing, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and allow to dry fully before storing or wearing. Spot cleaning addresses surface marks but not body oil accumulation in the down itself, which requires a full wash. Do not dry clean a down jacket. Dry cleaning solvents strip the DownTek™ treatment and degrade the down. It is also unnecessary. A correct machine wash is more effective, more thorough, and causes no damage when done properly.

Drying: a critical stage

Drying is where most people get confused and, as it can take an unnervingly long time, lose hope of ever restoring their jackets! It the number one customer enquiry we receive – ‘my down jacket has been ruined by the wash and won’t dry’. It hasn’t. A jacket that comes out of the wash looking alarmingly flat and clumped is completely normal. This is wet down, not damaged down. Correct drying restores loft entirely. Incorrect or incomplete drying leaves clumps that dry in place and are harder to resolve afterwards.

Add two or three clean tennis balls or dedicated dryer balls to the drum. As the drum turns, the balls continuously strike the baffles and break up clumping down clusters, helping prevent them from drying in a compressed state. Without this mechanical action, the jacket will still dry, but the risk of clusters clumping is higher. On heat setting: standard care instructions recommend low heat to protect the shell fabric and baffle construction over many wash cycles. In practice, a higher heat setting will dry the jacket faster and more effectively, and most quality fabrics and baffle materials tolerate it well. For jackets with lightweight face fabrics lower heat is the less risky choice. Follow the label’s care instructions. Check every 20 to 30 minutes during drying, remove the jacket and break up any remaining large clumps by hand, working the baffles gently. Return to the dryer and continue.

A jacket that comes out of the wash alarmingly flat and clumped is not damaged - it's just wet. Correct drying restores loft completely.

How to test for complete dryness: compress a section of the jacket firmly in your hand and release it. It should spring back to full loft immediately. If any section feels heavy, damp or fails to spring back, continue drying. The outside of a jacket can feel dry while the inner baffles still contain damp down. This is the most common storage mistake and leads to mildew establishing in the down, which produces a persistent smell that is very difficult to remove and may permanently compromise the clusters. When in doubt, keep drying. Another 30 minutes costs little; storing a damp jacket costs the jacket. DownTek™ note: the heat of tumble drying also reactivates the DownTek™ hydrophobic treatment.

DownTek™, DWR and storage

The DownTek™ treatment on all Jöttnar down jackets is a permanent PFC-free hydrophobic treatment bonded to the down clusters themselves. Unlike DWR treatments on the outer shell fabric, DownTek™ does not degrade with washing when the correct wash product is used. It is a molecular bond to the filament surface, not a topical coating. The maintenance requirement is minimal: use a compatible wash product (Nikwax Down Wash Direct or Grangers Down Wash), dry thoroughly, and the treatment will perform for the working life of the jacket. The shell fabric has a separate DWR finish that does degrade with use and washing. This is a surface treatment on the face fabric and is separate from the DownTek™ treatment on the down. To refresh it: a short tumble dry on a warm setting after washing often reactivates existing DWR sufficiently. If the outer fabric continues to wet out rather than bead light water, apply a specialist DWR spray such as Nikwax TX.Direct or Grangers Performance Repel, following the product instructions. Re-apply as needed.

Storage is where the most common and most avoidable long-term damage happens. The stuff sack is for carrying, not storing.

On storage: never store a down jacket in its stuff sack beyond the few hours or days of a trip. Long-term compression causes the clusters to lose their structural resilience, progressively reducing their ability to fully expand. Store hanging on a large coat hook, or loosely in a large breathable bag such as a pillowcase or cotton bag. A wardrobe hanging position is ideal. The jacket should be in its fully lofted state throughout storage. Ensure it is completely dry before storing as even slight residual moisture will cause mildew to develop during storage, damaging the down and producing a persistent unpleasant smell. Do not store near radiators or in direct sunlight, both of which will degrade the shell fabric and DWR finish over time.

Troubleshooting: diagnosing and fixing common problems

The jacket seems less warm than it used to be. This is almost always body oil accumulation matting the down clusters. Wash with specialist down wash, dry thoroughly with tennis balls, breaking up clumps manually every 20 to 30 minutes. This restores loft in the majority of cases. If warmth doesn't return after a correct wash, inspect each baffle section individually: compress and release each one in turn. A section that doesn't spring back to full loft indicates either incomplete drying or a baffle issue. Treat damp down first (return to the dryer), structural damage second (inspect the seam and baffle for tears or separation).

The jacket smells after washing. Cause: incomplete drying before storage, or mildew already established in stored damp down. Fix: wash again with specialist down wash and commit to the full drying process of two to four hours in the dryer with tennis balls, with the compression test at the end confirming complete dryness before storage. If smell persists after a second correct wash and dry, the mildew may be established in the clusters themselves. Repeat the process; in persistent cases a soak in Nikwax Down Wash before the machine cycle can help.

Down is escaping through the shell. Small amounts of down migration through the weave or seams of the shell fabric are normal in any down jacket, particularly in lighter face fabrics, and even though we test and select fabrics for their down proofing qualities, it can occasionally happen. Feather quills can also puncture face fabrics. If a cluster or quill has found a specific hole or damaged seam, pull the cluster or feather back inside the jacket. Grip the rear of the baffle and gently bring it in. Never pull on the protruding cluster or feather it as this will widen the hole and also bring a constant stream of down with it. ‘Pulling it out’ is a mistake. Here’s a hack for when the cluster of feather is back inside the baffle – a moistened finger rubbed on tiny holes makes them invisible to the eye. If you have torn the baffle, this is a different type of repair. Sewing solves the problem very effectively but will constrain the baffle fabric somewhat and is technically difficult. Many people instead use down jacket repair tape – widely available – and wear it on their jackets as a badge of honour.

Most down jacket problems have a straightforward diagnosis and a straightforward fix. The most common one, reduced warmth, is almost always body oil build-up, and almost always resolved by a correct wash.

The jacket won't loft after drying. Cause: incomplete drying, insufficient tennis ball action, or clumps that weren't broken up manually during the process. Fix: return to the dryer with the tennis balls, check every 15 minutes and work the baffles by hand at each check. The jacket is not done until every section springs back to full loft on the compression test.

The outer fabric DWR no longer beads water. Cause: DWR wears off with use and washing - normal and expected after a season of regular use. Fix: 20 minutes in the dryer on a warm setting often reactivates existing DWR. If this doesn't restore beading, apply Nikwax TX.Direct or Grangers Performance Repel following the product instructions. Re-apply as needed.

A complete quick reference: do not use standard biological detergent; do not dry clean; do not use a top-loading machine with an agitator; do not store compressed in a stuff sack; do not store even slightly damp; do not expose to prolonged direct heat or sunlight in storage. Everything else is fairly forgiving and a well-made down jacket with DownTek™ treatment is more resilient than the care instructions above might suggest.

Loft
How much a down cluster expands when uncompressed. DownTek™ treatment preserves loft in wet conditions where untreated down would collapse.
Baffle
Channels within a jacket that contain the down and prevent migration.
DownTek™
PFC-free hydrophobic treatment applied to individual down clusters.
DWR
Durable Water Repellency. A treatment applied to fabrics or insulation to resist moisture absorption.
Wetting out
When the DWR finish degrades and the outer face fabric absorbs water rather than shedding it, reducing breathability from the inside.
Biological detergent
