Technical headwear: beanies, neckwear and caps

Your head and neck are hard to keep warm without a hood, and cold air finds its way in at the collar. Good outdoor headwear deals with both and earns its place by being small, light and easy to adjust. Our technical headwear covers three jobs: beanies for warmth, neckwear or buffs to seal the gap between collar and face, and a featherlight cap for sun and sweat.

Types of headwear

Technical beanies

A technical beanie is built for use on the hill, not just the walk to the car. That means a close fit that sits under a hood or helmet, fabric that copes with sweat as well as cold, and a knit that holds its shape. We make a pure merino beanie for lightweight, everyday warmth, and merino-blend beanies with a fleece lining for colder days, with helmet-compatible fits.

Neckwear

A tube of fabric that seals the gap at the collar and can be pulled up over the face in wind – otherwise known as a buff. Ours come in two types. ThermoNet® neckwear uses PrimaLoft® insulating fibres, four times warmer than regular microfibre, in a seamless stretch knit, and can be worn as a gaiter, balaclava, hat or headband. Our winter-grade merino neck gaiter uses an exclusive honeycomb double knit that traps warm air and wicks sweat.

Caps

For running and trekking in sun and heat, a light, breathable cap with a sweatband keeps sweat and glare out of your eyes. Our Fjellvak cap weighs 45g, and its flexible visor packs easily into a running vest or shorts pocket.

How to choose

Helmets.

If you climb or ski, choose a close-fitting, helmet-compatible beanie and neckwear thin enough to layer under a helmet or hood.

Effort.

On hard climbs you will overheat in a thick hat. Neckwear is the easiest piece to adjust: pull it up when you stop, push it down when you move.

Conditions.

In wind and deep cold, combine a fleece-lined beanie with insulated or merino neckwear.

Technical headwear FAQs

What makes a beanie "technical"?

Fit, fabric and construction. A technical beanie fits closely enough to wear under a hood or helmet, uses fabric that handles sweat as well as cold, such as merino, and holds its shape after repeated washing and wear.

Merino or synthetic neckwear?

Merino is soft, warm and naturally odour-resistant. Synthetic insulated neckwear, such as ThermoNet®, is warmer for its weight and dries faster. Both work; choose merino for comfort over long days and insulated synthetic for the most warmth with the least bulk.
