Using NeoShell instead of any other membrane is the key; the incredible breathability is not only noticeable, it's a pleasure to try and push its limits.

Gear & Mountains

The attention to detail is amazing, the stitch count is high. The laser cutting is precise and all the fittings are well thought out and high quality.

If you are looking for that missing piece of outerwear in your wardrobe that will make you feel “indomitable, trampling the plain” or spur you onto ‘breaching the walls of the stronghold” of giants then go grab yourself a pair of the Vanir salopettes, a truly fantastic bit of kit, very well thought out and beautifully engineered to perform in the harsh winter environments of the mountains; go liberate yourself from the traditional hard shell membrane, get into a suit of armour and join the list of the Vanatru “those who honor” the Vanir, child of Jottnar.

Just got these Vanir pants having tried all the big players for fit / finish; these were quite simply, in another league. Had some contact with Tommy before, during and after purchase and the core values of the firm shine through and are presented with committed enthusiasm. The product is a terrific example of the careful thought and attention to detail behind its evolution - the pants are quite simply superb. They are very comfortable, a great fit, reassuringly well made and simply disappear once on - ' Fit and Forget'. I am looking forward to pre-ordering a 2015 Alfar jacket next as I am totally convinced of the veracity and integrity of Jottnar products. 5 STARS

I have sold every other winter trousers I possessed for a pair of Vanir. I mostly sold them once I got the salopette as I literally wouldn't like to wear anything else while climbing/mountaineering. It is wonderfully designed, stupidly light, keeps your core and kidneys protected against the cold and it gives such a freedom of movement it genuinely feels you're wearing nothing. No discomfort around the groin or the waist whatsoever. I always wear a pair of thermal tights underneath and never ever felt the cold a single time. I recently summited Mont Blanc (beginning of September) and up to -10C at the top I remained perfectly warm. Although described as a 'winter hardcore piece' it also works perfectly fine with warmer temperatures in the Alps around 3800m high and above. It breathes genuinely very well and I never felt like I was over heating although the sun was hitting generously hard. I couldn't recommend them enough and would consider buying a spare one in another colour...?

I recently used the Jöttnar Vanir for two weeks in Scotland during what can only be described as pretty epic conditions. During long fast walk ins they performed better than any other hard shell trousers or salopettes; the neoshell material works better than eVent or Gore-tex; there is no comparrsion. At no point over two weeks was the base layer on my legs damp. On exposed climbs and ridges, at times the only part of me that was truly comfortable were my legs. When my upper body was cold despite hard shell and belay jacket; hands cold regardless of whatever gloves were used; my legs remained comfortable. They are truly the perfect outer leg wear for winter conditions. Utterly brilliant, and a UK owned company to boot! Now to buy the Bergelmir jacket to match!

Only used once so far, in typical Scottish weather, wore from the car park to walk into the Lochnagar cliffs, started in rain which turned to snow. After four hours (we turned back after getting to the corrie) of constant rain/wet snow and a lot of effort my legs were bone dry! Top half of me was damp due to sweat inside a gore tex shell! My only gripe is at 6'2" and with my inside leg of 34" the legs on the Large are too short (I cannot use the gaiter) and the braces only just long enough.

Pretty close to perfect really. If you're looking for probably the best salopettes on the market for winter climbing then you might just have found them. I've written more about them here:

Got these in anticipation of another Scottish winter season like last year's. They are stunning. The feature set is excellent. They've forgotten nothing. Very clever salopette.

Sizing Charts

Jöttnar clothing is cut for a streamlined, athletic fit. Activity specific technical patterning and fabrics allow for unrestricted movement and layering. The measurements in the chart refer to your body measurements. Measure your body as described and then choose the corresponding product size.

In the case of our Garm softshell, as a versatile all-rounder, this particular product is generously sized compared to the athletic performance-orientated cut of our other jackets. If in between sizes, or in doubt, we recommend that you size down if choosing the Garm.
